Working While Studying: Guidelines for International Students in Canada

International students in Canada have exciting opportunities to work while pursuing their studies. However, it’s essential to understand and adhere to the rules set by Canadian immigration authorities. Please note that Elevare™ Career Institute does not currently offer employment opportunities to international students, and none of our programs qualify for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility. Below is an overview of the current work guidelines and the employment options available if you are in Canada on a work visa while studying.

Off-Campus Employment

Eligible students are allowed to work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions. To qualify for off-campus work, you must:

  • Hold a valid study permit with work authorization, or a work visa that permits employment while studying
  • Be enrolled full-time at a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Be enrolled in a program that is at least six months in duration and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate

During scheduled breaks (e.g., summer or winter holidays), you may work full-time.

Co-op and Internship Opportunities

If your academic program includes a mandatory co-op or internship component, you must secure a co-op work permit (or have the work authorization condition on your study permit) to work full-time during your placement. These opportunities provide valuable practical experience and typically account for 50% or less of your overall program duration.

On-Campus Employment

Many international students choose to work on campus. On-campus work is usually not subject to the 24-hour weekly limit, allowing you to work full-time if needed. Be sure to check your study permit for any specific conditions or restrictions. However, Elevare™ Career Institute does not currently offer employment opportunities to international students.

Employment Options While on a Work Visa During Your Studies

If you are physically in Canada on a work visa (for example, if you have transitioned to a temporary work permit for a specific job while continuing your studies), you may have additional employment options:

  • Full-Time On-Campus Positions: With no hourly restrictions, you can take on roles that may provide both income and career development. However, Elevare™ Career Institute does not currently offer employment opportunities to international students.
  • Off-Campus Jobs Beyond Standard Limits: Depending on the conditions of your work visa, you might be allowed more flexible hours than the typical 24-hour cap, especially if your permit is not tied to study conditions. However, ensure that any extra work complies with your visa conditions.
  • Co-op/Internship Placements: As with study permit holders, you may engage in co-op or internship programs that are integrated into your academic curriculum.
  • Remote or Freelance Work: Some work arrangements, such as remote positions or freelance projects, may be possible if they do not conflict with the conditions of your work visa and your study schedule.

Always confirm the specific conditions on your work permit or study permit, as they may restrict the type and number of hours you can work. For detailed, personalized advice, consult with an immigration advisor or refer to official IRCC resources.

Compliance and Responsibilities

It is crucial to comply with the conditions of your permit and any work regulations. Exceeding authorized work hours or working in prohibited roles can result in penalties, including the loss of your visa status. Always verify your work eligibility before starting a new job.
